Future Pathways

Apply. Lead.

Future Pathways builds on the foundation students develop through STEM Innovation Academy. Students apply their technical experience in new ways: communicating ideas, developing solutions, conducting research, taking greater responsibility, and learning how their work connects to people, organizations, and opportunities beyond the classroom.

Pathway 01 · Entrepreneurship

From Idea to Something Real

Students find a problem worth solving, figure out who has it, build something that addresses it, and pitch it, learning value creation, user discovery, and product thinking by doing all three.

Pathway 02 · Research & Publication

Ask a Question. Build the Evidence.

Students move from learning what is known to asking questions of their own. They review existing research, design a method, collect and analyze data, write their findings, and present or publish work for audiences beyond the classroom.

Pathway 03 · Communication & Public Speaking

Great Ideas Need a Voice

Students learn to present technical work clearly and hold a room while doing it through storytelling, technical presentation, and repeated practice in front of real audiences. Three Orblynx students have had talks selected and published by TED-Ed Student Talks.

Research & Publication

Student Work, Published

Students move from learning what is known to asking questions of their own. They review existing research, design a method, collect and analyze data, write their findings, and present or publish work for audiences beyond the classroom.

Orblynx students have published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Emerging Investigators and completed formal literary research studies, work that carries their names beyond the classroom.

Student Impact Story

From Student Research to Community Impact

Orblynx students, Mahsa and Katarina, explored how creative coping strategies, informed by research in effects of Expressive Arts Therapy, could help youth manage stress and anxiety. Their work grew beyond research when the students received a Forward Turn grant from the Community Foundation of Loudoun, providing support to put their findings into action.

Students helped bring creative coping workshops to local middle and high schools and extended the initiative into the community through collaborations with Inova Schar Cancer Institute, Loudoun Serenity House, and the Loudoun Coalition on Women and Girls (LCWAG), including pop-up experiences designed for local teens.

What began as a research question became an opportunity for students to apply what they had learned, build community partnerships, and use their work to support others.
